Jean Hugard’s book on close-up magic remains a must-have reference manual for every magician. You’ll find a wealth of material for restaurants, walk-a-round, hospitality suites, bars and pubs, cafes, etc. Magic that is as practical today as when the book was first written. 57 pages of magic by one of the field’s greatest teachers accompanied by over two dozen wonderful Nelson Hahne illustrations (cover art by Sid Lorraine).
Eleven information-packed chapters cover magic with handkerchiefs, rings, bills, sponge balls, and of course, cards and coins. Here’s just a sampling: Ring and Wand, Flying Ring, Cut and Restored (Hindu) Thread, Tacked Card, Torn Card, Migrating Cigarette, Vanishing Glass of Wine, Tearing Off a Button, Production of a Wand, Handkerchief Through Wand, Cigarette and Bill, and much more. New larger format, completely re-type set with high resolution graphics. True, print-on-demand quality.
Herein Mr. Hugard has compiled a collection of close up effects with all information about this new line of magic. Most every magician of prominence at the time the book was written was featured in the new entertainment field: Cardini, Leipsig, Zingone, Vernon, Jarrow, Benson, Brooks, Swan, Martin, Thompson, Orloff, Larry Gray, Dave Allison, Haskell, Devant, Albenice, Carlyle, and many others. A book full of ideas for the close up worker.
This booklet doesn’t deserve the name ‘booklet’ because it is packed with many wonderful effects using small objects, from cards and coins, to ropes and silks and everything in between. There is also a nice section on vesting and sleeving.
Jean Hugard was one of the outstanding teachers and authors in magic. A well known performer has been vanishing an orange for the last forty years in much the same manner that this booklet reveals how to vanish a dinner plate. Even Blackstone Sr. performed some of these stunts. Whenever the author is Jean Hugard – read it!
